Satkosia is a famous tiger reserve. It spreads over the mighty river Mahanadi in Odisha. The wildlife sanctuary established here in the year 1976. It is located at Angul district. The reserve has an area of 963.87sq km with 523.61sq km as core area. The Reserve is spread over 4 districts like Angul, Cuttack, Nayagarh and Boudh.

Satkosia houses a variety of wildlife such as elephants, tigers, leopards, gaur, nilgai, mouse deer, wild goats, sloth bears, sambar, spotted deer, giant squirrels and four-horned antelopes. It is also a home to the gharials, fresh water turtles, mugger crocodiles and snakes of different species. The area is also a part of the Mahanadi elephant reserve. The govt. has given permission of tourism only for 269 square kilometers of the total area of the reserve.

It is a good place for the wildlife enthusiasts, nature lovers, scientists and adventure freaks, in a similar manner. The Angul region is comparatively hilly and houses dense groves, moist and dry deciduous forests and vibrant flowers like Khalsi and Genwa. Apart from exploring the forests for various kinds of animals, one can also enjoy the scenic views and can go for trekking, elephant rides, night safaris and boating which are provided by the Forest Department.

Places to see at Satkosia Tiger Reserve

Baghmunda, is the home area of the tigers. This is a tourist attraction for the tigers. Tourist can see different types of tiger here.

The Athamallik-Chhendipada-Telkoi corridor, Satkosia-Khalasuni corridor and Kapilas-Rebena corridor is three main hallways one can go. Through this hallway the elephants travel and which can be mainly seen by the tourists.

Places to see near Satkosia Tiger Reserve

Tikarpada Wildlife Sanctuary in Orissa, India is a popular tourist destination that attracts many from far and wide. This is the housing place of gharials. This is a place with a wide variety of indigenous as well as migratory birds. This is a great place for the bird lovers.

Labangi is located near Tikarpada and is famous for trekking. One can see various animals at the Takarsingha water hole that is located near to Labangi.

Hati Girga is a nice combination of the natural view of the Jungle and river. This place is known as the watch tower. One can see the tigers from here.

By Air– The nearest airport is Bhubaneswar Airport.

By Train– The nearest railway stations is at Cuttack railway station.

By Road: Buses are available from Bhubaneswar to Angul and then one can organize private transport from Angul or Dhenkanal.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Satkosia is from the month of October to January.
